Maradona

The game of football is incomplete without the mention of Diego Armando Maradona Franco. Popularly known as Maradona, this legendary Argentine footballer is now 53 years old. There would hardly be any football fan who does not know about Maradona’s magical play during 1970s, 80s and 90s. He had a long football career, as he started playing the game at a tender age of 10. His wizardry was displayed in front of the world when he was simply a 12-year-old boy.

After playing at some junior games, Maradona made his club debut in 1976 when he joined the Argentinos Juniors club. Later, he remained associated with several reputed clubs where he also set records for being the most expensive player. While playing at international games, he scored 34 goals and also received 91 caps. His led his country’s team to win the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Maradona contributed greatly to the four World Cups he played with his team.

In the 1986 tournament, he was named the best player of the tournament and also won the Golden Ball award for his marvelous performance. All his fans remember the first goal he scored in his quarterfinal match against England. This goal was special because it was scored via an unpenalized handball. The same goal later got a famous name that is the “Hand of God.” Maradona’s second goal was also voted by people as the Goal of the Century.

 

Even though Maradona faced many controversies related to his health and drug addiction, he went on pursuing his career goals one after another. Playing at the attacking midfielder and second striker positions, he always remained unquestionably brilliant on the field. He possessed all technical skills and the vision required to lead a team to victory. Almost all his followers, aspiring and fellow players, experts, and critics regard him for his game. Jointly with Pelé, this legend was bestowed with the title of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century. People still love him the same way while he has been coaching his national team after taking retirement from the game.
